Why choose a marine CMMS software?

Tangi Captain

Have you ever heard of a marine CMMS software ? It is a software for managing tasks on your ship that can help you in your shipping business. This type of software has been used for over 20 years in the shipping industry for more than 20 years and continues to grow in popularity.

Here are some good reasons to implement a CMMS on board the ships our team identifies.

1. To keep track of your maintenance

All technical staff of a shipping company, whether they are Technical Directors, Chief Engineers or Workshop Managers, need to know and understand what happened on their ships. Who did what? Why did it happen? And when? 🤔

The advantages are numerous, both for fault detection and for the flight crew on board.

The history is indeed a key point of CMMS software, in the event of a change of personnel, as there will always be a written and organised record of the maintenance work carried out, which saves a lot of time.

The history also serves to enrich the general knowledge of the company and the knowledge capital, as the same breakdowns often occur on board ships. This saves precious hours when the description and solution of a previous breakdown is found, rather than searching from the start. This saves time for the seafarers, and therefore money for the shipowners.

2. For automatic data backup

Who hasn't experienced a computer crash where you lose all your data? Or the one click too many that deletes the wrong page? 🤬

The entire history of your ship disappears, along with hundreds of hours of work...

With a proper CMMS software, data is automatically saved on several servers, giving you increased security.

And if your software is really good (like Smart Sailors 😎), you can even go back to backups at specific times.

With the Smart Sailors application, even without a connection, the software saves your information and synchronises the information when it finds an internet connection. No data loss is possible.

3. To automatically synchronise the data.

The maritime world is special compared to a land-based company: ships are constantly on the move and can be very far from the Armement headquarters (distance, time difference 🕑 ).

To work efficiently, however, everyone needs to have the same up-to-date information, to be on the same wavelength. And this is not always the case with maintenance tracking in a notebook or excel file.

With modern CMMS software, all the data is synchronised between the ships and the head office, which avoids having to repeat itself by telephone or e-mail, or prepare maintenance that has already been done.

4. To receive alerts on vessel maintenance

With CMMS software, you will be alerted if your maintenance is overdue or if your inventory is low 🔔 The software gives you a support to rely on so you can save time on other tasks. No need to think about checking maintenance to be scheduled, the tool does it for you.

5. To optimise the cost of your maintenance

When it is discovered at the last minute that an important maintenance job must be done next week, the Technical Director or the Head of Engineering has to find suppliers and service providers with little room for negotiation, and possibly order parts already in stock.

With a good CMMS software, you can anticipate all your key maintenance in advance, visualise your spare parts stocks and control your costs (you will be able to get your parts at the best price 😉 )

Some of our customers also use their CMMS software to optimise their maintenance intervals on certain equipment and save on working hours and spare parts costs.

6. To add value to your vessel

When buying a used car, we like the seller to have an up-to-date service book with all the bills in order.

So who wants to buy a boat where the owner is not fully up to date on the maintenance of their vessel? 🤯 Where there is no history and the buyer has no way of knowing what has been maintained or not?

If you want to resell your vessel more easily, it will be even easier to do so if your vessel is equipped with a CMMS software that guarantees a good follow-up of your fleet. This adds value and will be a sign of confidence for future buyers.
